Double Discount Calculator

Two discounts in a row? Enter the original price and both percentages. The second discount applies to the already-reduced price — the results compound, they don't add.

Final price after 2 stacked discounts

$128

You save $72 — that's 36% off in a single discount.

How it compounds:

  1. After 20% off: $160.00
  2. After 20% off: $128.00

Stacked discounts multiply — each percentage applies to the already-reduced price, so a 20% + 20% stack is 36% off, not 40%.

Why stacked discounts don't add up

A common mistake is adding the two percentages: 20% + 20% = 40% off. In reality the second discount is applied to a smaller number. On a $100 item:

  1. 20% off $100 → $80
  2. 20% off $80 → $64

The final price is $64 — an effective discount of 36%, not 40%. That also means the order of the coupons doesn't matter: 20% then 50% lands on the same price as 50% then 20%.

Quick formula: multiply the remaining fractions. 0.8 × 0.8 = 0.64, so you pay 64% of the original price and the effective discount is 1 − 0.64 = 36%.
